With the price of gasoline forever spiraling upward, subcompacts have become more and more popular in recent years. We have seen the slow but steady move from big fuel guzzlers to smaller economical cars. It seems likely that this trend will continue into the future.

However, those downsizing their cars still expect refinement as well as economy and fun. The competition is fierce. To appeal to drivers, both Kia and Ford have tried to combine finesse and quality with economy to win over this sector of the car market.

Which Is the Better Car?

When it comes to fuel efficiency, horsepower, optional extras, and price, the difference isn't huge. The Rio wins on the "fun factor" as it is the nicer car to drive, has a better appointed interior trim, and better placed controls. The Rio has all around better visibility and is marginally the more powerful of the two cars with a longer warranty.

If you would like to see a Kia Rio up close, take a test drive, and look at the various trim levels, come along to McCafferty Kia of Mechanicsburg, located at 6302 Carlisle Pike, Mechanicsburg, PA 17050. McCafferty's friendly staff will be happy to discuss all of your Kia needs.

The Fiesta

There has not been a Ford Fiesta in American showrooms for some years. The sixth generation Ford Fiesta reached the American market in 2010. The Ford Fiesta comes in both sedan and hatchback body shapes. The car is powered by a 1.6-liter inline 4-cylinder gasoline engine with a 5-speed manual or 6- speed automatic transmission. The car is lightweight, attractive, well-designed, and easy to drive. It comes with up-to-date features such as iPod, USB, and Bluetooth connectivity options. The interior trim is slightly below the quality found in the Kia Rio.

You would expect this car to be frugal with fuel, and it is. The Ford Fiesta has a fuel efficiency of 29 miles per gallon in the city and 39 miles per gallon on the open road. This, combined with a well-designed face and comfortable seats, equates to a lot of car for your money.

The Kia Rio

Kia hasn't been in the American car market for long; the first Kia dealership opened in 1994. The Kia Rio is now in its third generation, the first Rio appearing in 2011. The latest Rio is much improved on previous models and is also more powerful than the Fiesta. The Kia Rio has either a 1.2-liter or 1.4-liter inline 4-cylinder engine. The Rio's fuel efficiency is slightly less than the Fiesta at 28 miles per gallon in the city and 36 miles per gallon on the highway.  However, Kia wins over the Ford Fiesta with its six-speed transmission and a better warranty period.
