Standard Safety in the 2018 Optima and Sonata

When it comes to safety features, both the Optima and Sonata have quite a few to get excited about.

Both sedans come with standard safe driving technologies like the Blind Spot Detection and Lane Change Assist Systems.

They also both offer rear parking sensors-like the Kia Rear Parking Assist System (RPAS)-that audibly alert drivers when they're getting too close to another object while in reverse.

For safer driving during inclement weather, the Optima and Sonata offer heated outside mirrors that melt away snow and condensation, so your visibility remains unimpaired.

The biggest difference between the two models here is that the 2018 Kia Optima offers all these safety features standard with its basic trim. Sonata drivers would have to upgrade to a more advanced trim or add on a package to get the rear parking sensors and heated outside mirrors.

If you want a car that makes safety standard, the Optima is the best bet.

2018 Kia Optima vs Hyundai Sonata Fuel Efficiency

Drivers looking for a highly efficient engine will find that both the Optima and Sonata fit the bill.

Both models feature a standard 2.4L direct injection engine, producing 185 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque.

They both also boast an impressive EPA-estimated 25 MPG city and 36 MPG highway fuel economy.1 However, if you're looking to operate with optimal efficiency, you'll have to look toward the Optima.

The standard Active Eco System in the 2018 Optima takes an extra step to keep your vehicle in a state of efficient balance. This system, when activated, monitors your vehicle's engine, transmission, and A/C systems. It then automatically adjusts them for peak fuel economy.

The Sonata does not have a comparable feature available, so the responsibility of developing efficient driving habits lies entirely with the driver.

Available Audio Systems

While both sedans allow Bluetooth® audio streaming, if you're truly looking to crank some tunes, look no further than the 2018 Kia Optima. This model features an available 630-Watt Harman/Kardon® QuantumLogic™ Premium Surround Sound audio system with Clari-Fi™.

Add in the unique noise-reducing interior design in the Optima and you'll never be asked to sacrifice audio clarity and quality for the ambient traffic and rain sounds outside your vehicle

The comparable available system in the Hyundai Sonata maxes out at 400 watts. Still impressive, but the audio system in the Kia Optima lets you turn the volume dial much further to the right without distorting the sound.

The audio system in the Sonata also does not feature Clari-Fi™ technology, or a noise-reducing design, so drivers won't have as pure an audio experience as they would with the Kia Optima.
