2018 Kia Sorento vs Chevrolet Traverse

Crossovers offer the perfect combination of varying degrees of utility with the family-friendly appeal of traditional passenger vehicles. Two of the top choices in the large crossover category are the 2018 Kia Sorento and the 2018 Chevrolet Traverse, but there are some distinguishing factors between them.

For drivers in Mechanicsburg and Harrisburg, we've placed the 2018 Kia Sorento and the 2018 Chevrolet Traverse side by side, so you can compare all the key differences between the two. Read more about each vehicle here, and learn where you can go to test drive the winner.

Performance

The standard engine for the Chevy Traverse is a 3.6L V6 that produces 310 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque, paired to a 9-speed automatic transmission. Otherwise, the only option is a turbocharged Traverse RS.

The Kia Sorento offers plenty of options. The base engine is a 2.4L inline-four that produces 185 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque, paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission. There's also a 2.0L turbocharged engine option, which produces 240 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, also paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. The highest power option is the 3.3L V6, which produces 290 horsepower and 252 lb-ft of torque, paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The Sorento also offered Drive Mode Select, with Eco, Comfort, and Sport modes to alter the driving experience.

The Chevy Traverse may offer slightly more torque and horsepower with its V6 option, but it doesn't offer the same versatility in the driving experience. It's also lumbering, heavily navigating corners with little body control and numb steering.

The 2018 Sorento is capable both on and off-road, with agility that's more in line with smaller crossovers. The all-weather system increases this athleticism with Torque Vectoring Cornering Control, which helps makes more precise turns, but the Sorento is plenty surefooted on its own.

As for towing, the Sorento is rated for up to 5,000 pounds with all-wheel drive, and 3,500 pounds with front-wheel drive. The Traverse tops out at 2,000 pounds.

Comfort and Space

The 2018 Traverse works just fine as a simple, family crossover that seats seven in its three rows, though the adults in the third row aren't going to be very happy. The front and second rows offer plenty of legroom and headroom within the airy cabin, but the third row is exceptionally cramped in the leg area, as well as being tight for taller adults. There's also an issue with shoulder space when adults sit side-by-side.

The 2018 Sorento offers a spacious cabin, plenty of legroom and headroom in all three rows, and plush, contoured seating. There's even extending thigh supports and available power tilt/height-adjustable seating for the passenger seat to add to the comfort. The third row is also easy to access, which is rare in this class of vehicles.
