Sportage vs Equinox: Performance

Power is important when it comes to a compact SUV and, luckily, these two models deliver. However, there are some differences that could help you in making your decision.

The 2020 Kia Sportage comes equipped with a standard 2.4-L 4-cylinder engine that boasts up to 181 horsepower. This powertrain is also paired with the front-wheel drivetrain and an electronically controlled 6-speed automatic transmission. This advanced transmission makes shifting a dream and comes equipped with an overdrive mode.

With this model, you can also opt for the available Dynamax™ fully active all-wheel drive (AWD) system. It uses sensors to smartly monitor road conditions and then delivers the exact amount of power to each wheel to maximize traction and control.

Additionally, the Sportage goes above and beyond for the adventurers among us. When properly equipped with the optional 2.0-liter Turbo engine and other additional equipment, the Kia Sportage is capable of towing up to 2,000 pounds.

With the 2020 Chevy Equinox, you won't get quite as much power or capability. This model is outfitted with a smaller standard 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that generates just 170 horsepower. This engine is also paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, but it's not electronically controlled and offers fewer features, so that shifting is not as streamlined and simple.

Even when the Equinox is equipped with one of its available more powerful engines, this SUV can only tow a maximum of 1,500 pounds. However, to improve traction on the road, an AWD system is available as well.

Kia Sportage vs Chevy Equinox: Interior Comfort

Whether you're taking on the highway or cruising the back roads, you'll want to be as comfortable as possible. Fortunately, the Kia Sportage delivers with a variety of luxurious interior features. When you step inside, you and your passengers will be met with optimal coziness thanks to heated front seats available in every trim level. Standard leather seating is also available for two of four trim levels to elevate style. You can add even more with 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat, heated rear seats, and ventilated front seats-all standard on certain trims of the Sportage.

Many of these features are, unfortunately, not offered in the Chevy Equinox. There is no available 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat at any trim level of this vehicle. You'll have to settle for an 8-way power-adjustable driver's seat, and that's only available in the higher trims. Plus, ventilated seats don't come standard in any trim, only as an available option.

When it comes to roominess in these models, the same theme continues. The Kia Sportage offers an interior volume of 129.3 cubic feet that gives up to five passengers plenty of space to stretch out. On the other hand, the passenger volume of the Equinox comes in at only 103.2 cubic feet. While it can also hold up to five passengers, inside the Chevrolet model you might be left wanting a little more room.

  Kia Sportage  Chevy Equinox
Front Legroom  41.5 inches   40.9 inches
Rear Headroom  39.1 inches  38.5 inches
Standard Cargo  30.7 cubic feet  29.9 cubic feet

Sportage vs Equinox: Safety

Safety is a priority for most, if not all, SUV drivers. Both Kia and Chevrolet know this is important, and they make sure that, not only are you and your passengers secure within the vehicles, but others on the road around you are safe as well.

With the Kia Sportage and the Chevy Equinox, you can have peace of mind while you drive. Both vehicles come equipped with standard Electronic Stability Control, Traction Control Systems, Anti-Lock Braking Systems, and rearview cameras.

However, the Kia Sportage takes safety a step further with the addition of their suite of progressive driving aids. These features can even take immediate action when the system detects that a collision may be imminent. Best of all, several of them come standard on every trim level. These include Forward Collision Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Keeping Assist, and Driver Attention Warning. You can add on extra confidence-building systems as well. They include:

  • Blind Spot Collision Warning
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning
  • Smart Cruise Control with Stop and Go

A few of these features are available in the Chevrolet Equinox, such as standard Lane Keep Assist and Front Pedestrian Braking. However, most of the other safety features offered in the Kia Sportage are only available in higher trim levels of the Equinox, and there's no driver attention warning available at all in the Equinox.

Kia Sportage vs Chevy Equinox: Which One Is for You?

It's clear that both of these compact sport utility vehicles will surely elevate your travels. However, as you can see, the Kia Sportage goes above and beyond with elevated performance and capability, more standard features, and safety to keep you confident on the road. Plus, we haven't even touched on everything that the 2020 Sportage has to offer.
